Or more like, guess what is back. Was in the mail today. So they made sure that I receive it on time. Complain as much as you like about inefficient bureaucracy/government/whatever. This went completely flawless. Maybe they are aware that if they mess with something like people’s licenses, there are enough nutjobs out there to spike a few donuts with rat poison?

If I ever hear a German complain about inefficiency, I’ll send them....literally anywhere else...for a reality check.

Wow you still have those paper drivers licences in Germany? Over here in the Netherlands we changed to creditcard sized once about 10 years ago, and we need to renew the card itself every 10 years.
Anyhow, good to see you have it back!

“The ban ends at the end of the 29th.” is what it says. So I can drive again on Monday 30th. I planned it this way. They just sent it back in advance as to make sure that I actually, physically have it my hands on Monday. Which is nice, I guess.

They switched to plastic sometime around the millenium. The old ones just don’t expire. I know people in their 60s who still have their first (grey) license with a photo from when they were 18.
This would be the current one.

Overhere the renewal used to be 5 years IIRC, so all of the paper ones have vanished by now, that’s why they seem quite old fashioned to me.

Was it really 5 years? I got my (paper) license in 2001, and had to have it renewed (and thus replaced by plastic) a decade later.
